Can’t Teach Old Dog New Tricks but What About Cats & Their Litter Boxes |

Our family has had a black cat we have affectionately called Sylvester since I was in grade school. He has really been in our lives for as long as my brother and I can remember. I find it hard to get attached to cats but since good old Sylvester has been going strong with us for 16 longs years it is impossible not to think of him as part of the family. Since he is 16, he is getting pretty slow moving. It’s sad because he used to prowl around outside, climbing trees, catching birds and dropping them on the doorstep with a face saying, “aren’t you proud of me.” Now he is a big sleeper.
With age has come some bathroom problems. He has always used the litter boxes around the house but now he doesn’t always make it. We tried adding more litter boxes but it didn't really work. My mom has been teaching him to go to the door now if he can’t make it to the litter boxes. I don’t know what technique she is using but last time I went home there was Sylvester waiting by the door. He uses the litter boxes when he can but now he also stands near the door when he can’t make it. Since he loves catching rays by the glass patio door it is really easy for him to tell my mom when it’s time to go out.
