dog foodI have mentioned the fact that I own two wonderful English Springer Spaniel dogs in  earlier posts. Well one of the things that I have learned about being a dog owner is that the training never really stops. Dogs are like people to the extent that certain things can act as a trigger and give them mental issues. Our job, as dog owners, is to help our pets get past these issues. I have found that dog food treats are very helpful when it comes to retraining dogs or giving them a tightening up session.
I will give you an example of something that happened with my four year old dog Leo to show how dog food treats can help a pet get past a mental issue. Recently my husband replaced a sump pump we have just outside the basement door to prevent flooding. This new sump pump makes a very loud gurgling sucking sound. We let the dogs out to do their business via the basement door, which leads to our back yard.
For a while Leo was reluctant to go outside and at first we didn’t know why he was acting so weird. Then we figured out that he did not like the noise the sump pump was making. I used dog food treats, stroking and reassurance to get Leo to come outside of his own free will despite the sump pump noise. It took a few attempts and plenty of dog food treats, but now Leo is no longer afraid of the pump’s noise. I buy my dog food treats online for less than the standard price so I can retrain my pets without too much expense.
